My Period Story- Angie Mukora

Angie's Period Journey: Here’s to becoming a woman!

For Angie, getting her period was more than just a milestone—it was a moment she eagerly anticipated, a rite of passage into womanhood. But what she didn't expect was how it would bring her closer to someone special in her life in an unexpected way. Angie's story is a beautiful reminder of the bonds that shape us and the memories we carry. Here's a  heartwarming tale of family, confidence, and the journey into becoming a young woman.

At what age did you get your period?
I started my period when I was 11 years old.

Has menstruating gotten easier, harder, or is it the same as it always has been, with each passing year?
It seems the older I get, the harder it becomes.

Tell us your period story.
I am one of those girls who COULDN'T WAIT to start my period! I loved reproductive class in Class 6 Science, and I carried around those 'About You' books just waiting for the day I'd start. For me, starting my period was equivalent to coming of age. Looking back now I wish I knew what was coming lol! Regardless, I am the last born of 3, and getting my period meant I was a young woman, who could relate to my older sister and mum.

I was eager for this to be a bonding activity. To belong. To become a woman. Funny enough, while I expected it would be a bonding activity with my mum, it actually ended up being a bonding experience with my dad! The day after I started my period, my dad was dropping me to school - as he always had. I excitedly told him, "Dad, I wanted to let you know that I am now officially a young woman and not a little girl anymore. I made the transition officially yesterday!"

My dad laughed and was truly touched to be let in on what probably felt like a taboo topic for most African dads! I have always been a daddy's girl, and this remains as one of our core memories. To this day, he will tell that story to whoever listens, as evidence that his little girl is and has always been confident in who she is, and that our close relationship is incomparable.

What is one piece of advice that lives with you while you are on your period?
It's alright to give yourself a little grace during your period. Take that personal day if you are cramping. Satisfy that period craving. Take that soak. Your body is quite literally bleeding from the inside! Be kind to yourself.

Share with us one affirmation you use to stay positive and empowered during your period.
It may be uncomfortable, but one day, this body will be home to new life in this world. And that is a superpower.
